Indonesia battery project breaks ground in Karawang and Halmahera
On Sunday 29 June 2025, a CATL subsidiary and its partners broke ground on a battery project in Indonesia. The company release puts it at nearly USD 6 billion and gives the first phase of the Karawang cell plant as 6.9 GWh a year.

What was announced
The company release is dated 1 July 2025. It says Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend, a subsidiary of CATL's Brunp unit, broke ground with PT Aneka Tambang and Indonesia Battery Corporation. The Star reported the ceremony on Sunday 29 June 2025.
The project covers nickel mining and processing, battery materials, battery recycling and battery manufacturing. Battery manufacturing sits in Karawang, West Java, at Karawang New Industry City and Artha Industrial Hill. Nickel, materials and recycling sit at FHT Industrial Park in East Halmahera, North Maluku. The release gives more than 2,000 hectares in total.
At full operation, the release says Halmahera will make about 142,000 tons of nickel and 30,000 tons of cathode materials a year. It will also process about 20,000 tons of recycled batteries.
Where the sources differ
The Star gave the total as USD 5.9 billion, split between USD 4.7 billion in Halmahera and USD 1.2 billion in West Java. The release says nearly USD 6 billion. Neither source gives a completion date for the whole project.
The release gives no room classes, humidity targets or build schedule for the cell plant.
What a facility owner or supplier should check next
If you want to supply this project or a similar one, ask the owner for its user requirements. Ask for particle class, and also for temperature, humidity and pressure targets, since a battery room may be specified on more than particle counts.
Check which phase your scope belongs to. The release states capacity only for the first phase at Karawang. Take dates and scope from the project owner, not from press reports.
