Colombia secures funding for a new essential medicines plant at the Universidad de Antioquia
On 19 February 2026, Colombia's public broadcaster RTVC reported that the national government had secured up to 423,613 million pesos for a new essential medicines plant. El Colombiano describes the Universidad de Antioquia as leading the project.

The Ministry of Health, the university and the National Institute of Health signed an inter-administrative agreement. The Ministry will pay 350,000 million pesos through future budget commitments to 2032. The university adds the land, its current plant and its scientific capacity. The new plant will stand on the university's El Carmen de Viboral campus. The work is planned over seven years.
The current plant in Medellín will get new equipment and technology at once. RTVC says it was recently enabled as an official supplier to the Pan American Health Organization. Health Minister Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo said the agreement secures historic resources to strengthen public medicine production.
El Colombiano reported on 21 February 2026 that the new plant is planned at about 10,000 square metres, against about 400 now. It names three lines: solids, liquids and injectables. It quotes the dean as saying capacity could grow 30 to 40 times. It lists medicines for malaria, Chagas disease, parasite infections and HIV among the products.
What the reports leave out
Neither report gives a building start date or room classes. Neither names a GMP standard for the new plant.
What a facility owner or supplier should check next
Solids, liquids and injectables need different rooms. Injectable lines are sterile work and ask for the strictest air control. Ask the university which lines come first and which GMP guide the design will follow.
