Hollow MgO Cleanroom Panels
Hollow MgO panels have a magnesium oxide board core with hollow channels, faced with colour-coated or stainless steel. Buyers use them for cleanroom walls and ceilings where a non-combustible core is needed and a lighter panel helps installation.
Best for
- Cleanroom walls and ceilings
- Hospital and pharmaceutical rooms that need a non-combustible core
- Projects where a lighter panel eases installation
- Rooms where small cables run inside the panel, if the project allows

| Catalogue profile codes | HA-MG-TG950/50 and HA-MG-TG1150/50 |
| Length | Made to the project; no universal maximum listed |
| Fire behaviour | Non-combustible core. Fire rating belongs to the tested panel assembly |
| Insulation | Moderate. Rock wool and silica rock insulate better |
| Weight | Medium; lighter than solid boards. Rock wool is heavier |
| Services | Hollow channels can carry small cables where the project allows; confirm on the drawing |
| Joint types | Tongue-and-groove, centre aluminium or male-female |
| Wet areas | Keep the core out of standing water; use sealed joints or another core for wash-down areas |
Options
What you can specify
- Colour-coated steel faces
- Stainless steel faces
- Tongue-and-groove, centre aluminium or male-female joint
- Wall or ceiling use
- Fire, hygiene or test documents to match the project
- Magnesium oxysulfate core, confirmed for the offered configuration
How to choose hollow MgO
Hollow MgO, rock wool and silica rock panels all have non-combustible cores. Hollow MgO is medium in weight with moderate insulation. Rock wool and silica rock insulate better, and rock wool is the heaviest of the three. EPS has a combustible core and is not for fire zones.
Choose hollow MgO when you want a non-combustible core with a lighter panel, and the room does not need the higher insulation of rock wool or silica rock.
Three non-combustible cores side by side
| Hollow MgO | Rock wool | Silica rock | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Inorganic board with hollow channels | Mineral fibre | Inorganic board |
| Weight | Medium | Heaviest of the three | Medium |
| Insulation | Moderate | Better | Better |
| Cables inside the panel | Small cables in the channels, if the project allows | No | Confirmed on the quotation |
| Wet areas | Keep out of standing water | Confirmed on the quotation | Confirmed on the quotation |
| Ask for | Board chemistry and moisture limit | Fire report; core density | Fire report for the panel |
Ask about the board chemistry
MgO boards are not all the same. In 2018 the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) issued an advisory on magnesium oxychloride boards. It linked chloride and moisture to corrosion of metal and advised caution in humid conditions. It had not evaluated oxysulfate or oxyphosphate boards.
So ask every supplier which MgO chemistry the board uses, the moisture limit, and how cut edges are sealed. On a cleanroom panel the faces are steel, so this matters most where the room is washed down or held at high humidity.
What to specify in an enquiry
Send the wall or ceiling use, room heights and areas, or the drawing. Give the panel thickness and width series, the face sheet (colour-coated or stainless steel, thickness and colour) and the joint type. List any fire, hygiene or test documents the project requires. Add the destination port and the delivery date you need.
Quote checklist
| Send | Why |
|---|---|
| Wall and ceiling schedules, sent separately | Ceilings need a support and load check |
| Thickness and width series, or catalogue code | Confirms the section drawing |
| Face sheets: metal, thickness, colour | Colour-coated or stainless |
| Joint type | Tongue-and-groove, centre aluminium or male-female |
| Rooms that are washed down or humid | To decide sealed joints or another core |
| Cable runs inside the panels | Must be on the drawing, not decided on site |
| Documents you need | Fire, hygiene or test reports for the exact build |
| Destination port | Packing and freight |
What goes wrong on site
MgO cores must stay out of standing water. In wash-down rooms, agree sealed joints or a different core before ordering. Cable runs inside the channels also need to be shown on the drawing, not decided on site.
A core name does not give a fire rating. Ask for the report that matches the offered panel build. For ceilings, ask for an assembly-specific load assessment, because thickness alone does not set a ceiling load.

Questions
Common questions
Is MgO panel suitable for wet areas?
Keep MgO cores protected from standing water. For wash-down areas we recommend sealed joints or a different core.
Can services run inside the panel?
The hollow channels can carry small cables where the project allows. Confirm this on the drawing.
How does hollow MgO compare with rock wool and silica rock panels?
All three have non-combustible cores. Hollow MgO is medium weight with moderate insulation. Rock wool and silica rock insulate better, and rock wool is the heaviest of the three.
Do you help if our team has never installed these panels?
Panels are numbered and shipped with layout drawings, an installation guide and videos. Our engineers support your team by video call.
What sizes are hollow MgO panels made in?
The catalogue parameter table lists an effective width of 1,150 mm and thicknesses of 50 to 150 mm, with length made to the project. Profile codes HA-MG-TG950/50 and HA-MG-TG1150/50 are also listed. We confirm the offered thickness and width in writing with the section drawing.
Does MgO board corrode the steel face?
Ask which chemistry the board uses. A 2018 CCMC advisory linked chloride-type (oxychloride) boards and moisture to corrosion of metal. It did not cover oxysulfate boards. Ask for the board type, the moisture limit and how cut edges are sealed.
