Hinged Cleanroom Doors in Brick, Block and Panel Partition Walls
Hinged cleanroom doors can go into brick or block walls as well as cleanroom panel partitions, but the frame detail is different for each. For a masonry wall, measure the real opening, the wall thickness including plaster or other finishes, and the finished floor level, send photographs, and have the frame section, fixing and frame-to-wall seal agreed before the door is made. In a panel wall, the opening is planned in the panel layout and the frame is matched to the panel thickness.

Brick or block wall vs panel partition
| Brick or block wall | Cleanroom panel partition | |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Already built or built by others; must be measured | Planned in the panel layout and cut at the factory |
| Wall thickness | Varies with the masonry and the plaster or coating on each face | Set by the panel: our frames are listed for 50, 75 and 100 mm panel walls |
| What fixes the frame | Fixings into the masonry, as on the frame drawing | The panel edges and frame profile |
| Main risk | The opening is not square, plumb or the size on the drawing | Panel tolerances push the opening off its grid line |
| Finish around the frame | Wall finish must meet the frame flush and be sealed to it | Frame sits flush with the factory-made panel face |
| What to send | Measured opening, wall thickness with finishes, floor level, photographs, wall material | Panel thickness, wall build-up, drawing revision |
A project can have both: a panel cleanroom built inside a masonry building, with some doors in the outer masonry walls. List each door's wall type in the door schedule.

What to measure on a brick or block opening
Measure every opening; do not take the size from the building drawing. For each door mark, record:
- Construction opening: width and height, with units.
- Wall thickness including finishes, on both faces.
- Finished floor level on both sides of the opening.
- Wall material and anything known about it (for example solid or hollow block); mark unknowns "to confirm".
- Photographs of the opening, the floor and the wall edges, with nearby obstructions.
- Opening direction and the required clear passage in the open position.
Keep the clear passage, the construction opening and the external frame size as three separate numbers. Do not work out the opening by adding a standard allowance to the clear passage. See the door size guide.
Frame, fixing and seal
Ask the supplier for three details for each masonry opening, and have your designer and installer review them against the real wall before ordering:
- The frame section: how the frame meets a wall of that thickness.
- The fixing detail: what fixes the frame into the masonry, and at what positions.
- The frame-to-wall seal: how the joint between frame and wall finish is closed on both faces.
The finished joint must be smooth and cleanable. EU GMP Annex 1 asks for surfaces that are smooth, impervious and unbroken (para 4.5), with no recesses that are hard to clean (para 4.6), and for materials that tolerate repeated cleaning and disinfectants (para 4.7). A frame that stands proud of the wall leaves a ledge that holds dust.
Agree in writing who prepares or corrects the opening, who supplies the frame and fixings, and who installs them.
Swing direction and pressure
A hinged door in a cleanroom has air pressure pushing on it. At 25 Pa, a 1.0 × 2.1 m leaf carries 52.5 N. A door that opens against the pressure needs a closer and handle sized for that load. Set the swing from the pressure plan and the layout, and check it before the frame is fixed. Hinged doors are simple, easy to interlock and need little upkeep, but they need swing space and their gaps leak. See cleanroom door selection and cleanroom pressure differentials.
Our hinged doors
Our cleanroom doors are made in our factory in Tianjin.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Hinged types | Single leaf, double leaf, unequal leaf |
| Typical openings | Single 900 × 2100 mm (widths 900–1200 mm); double 1500 × 2100 mm; unequal leaf 1200 × 2100 mm; other sizes from your drawing |
| Frames | Steel, stainless steel or aluminium |
| Panel wall frames | For 50, 75 and 100 mm panel walls |
| Leaf | About 50 mm thick; 0.5–1.2 mm colour-coated galvanized steel or stainless steel faces |
| Leaf core | Paper honeycomb, aluminium honeycomb, or rock wool where a non-combustible core is specified |
| Vision panel | Double-glazed, flush, rounded or square edges |
For fire doors, the rating belongs to the tested door assembly, not to the leaf core. Ask for documents that cover the complete offered assembly. See cleanroom doors.

Questions
Common questions
Can hinged cleanroom doors be installed in brick walls?
Yes. The frame interface has to be reviewed for that wall. Send the measured opening, the wall thickness including finishes, the floor level, the opening direction and photographs, and agree the frame section, fixing and seal before ordering.
What is different about fitting a cleanroom door in a block wall instead of a panel wall?
A panel wall opening is planned in the panel layout and the frame matches the panel thickness. A block wall opening is built by others, so it must be measured, and the frame must suit the real wall thickness and finishes.
How should the gap between a door frame and a brick wall be sealed?
With a joint that leaves a smooth, cleanable surface and tolerates your cleaning agents. EU GMP Annex 1 asks for surfaces without hard-to-clean recesses. Ask the supplier for the frame-to-wall seal detail for both faces.
Which way should a hinged cleanroom door open?
As the pressure plan and layout state. A door that opens against the pressure needs a closer and handle sized for the load; at 25 Pa a 1.0 × 2.1 m leaf carries 52.5 N.
Can one door schedule cover doors in both brick and panel walls?
Yes. Give each door mark its wall type and wall thickness, so each frame is detailed for its own wall.
